THESE ARE SOME OF THE QUESTIONS OUR CUSTOMERS HAVE
MADE:
What
is the difference between Naturalization and Citizenship?
We call Naturalization to the whole process to become 'Naturalized' and become an American
Citizen. Citizenship is the goal, but in general terms both words have the same meaning as when we name the 'Citizenship
Test' or the 'Naturalization Test'.
Who qualifes to become a US Citizen?
If you acquire your legal permanent residence by getting married to an American Citizen, you can apply after
three years, as long as you are still married to the same person. (From the date that appears on your Green Card)
If you got divorced to the American Citizen, or you became a LPR due to a petition made
by a close relative other than your spouse, then you need to wait fiver years. (From the date that apperas on your Green Card).
What
should I do to start my application?
Make
sure you qualify, get the money for the application, and study English if you dont' know the language well yet. Make
a plan both to save money and to study in advance.
How
long will the whole process will take?
It varies from city
to city and from one state to another. The average is four to six months from the moment you mail your application till
the day you actually attend the ceremony and take the Oath and receive your Certificate.
How much do I have to pay for my application?
Currently the fee for application to Naturalization is $675 (six hundred seventy five dollars). Fees
are accepted in the form of money order, personal check or cashiers check only. Checks should be made payable to Department
of Homeland Security or U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services.
What documents should I attach to my application?
Two passport photos, copy of back and front of your Green Card, copy of your driver license,
copy of your birth certificate (translated into English), copy of any decree of divorce and/or marriage you may have, copy
of birth certificates of your kids who are not American, copy of each page of your Passport (if you have one). Also
make sure you have copies of your income taxes for the last three years (you don't need to send those but have them ready
in case they request them at the interview), copy of any legal paper that establishes you do not have any matter pending with
justice so attach a judge document or police records if it applies.
Is
there any reason why they could deny my Application?
The
USCIS director of every center may consider issues such as DUI, lack of alimony payments, or having left the country for more
than six months to a year, as reasons that can put your application at risk. It is important to be honest when filling
your application, but consider those matters may request further support documentation. Every case is particular.
Where can I find detailed information about the Naturalization
process?
The government has a complete web site at
http://www.uscis.gov and all the information is there free for the public.
How is the Citizenship interview?
As
you get into the office and you are called your number the agent may start talking to you. A social conversation is
a good way to test your level of English conversation. The first part is to pass the Civics questions (the ones in our
US100 DVD!). They will ask you 10 and your must respond correctly at least 6 of them. Then you will be asked to
read two sentences and to write other two. Third, you will be asked several of the questions that appear on the last
pages of the N-400, Application for Naturalization; and finally, they will ask you details about your children, spouse, parents,
and other information to make sure what you answered on the form you sent previously is correct.
How can I prepare for the the Citizenship Interview?
English language is the main requirement that will help you to study the 100 questions, and to be
more relaxed a the time of the interview. Study in advance, pay a tutor, use audio-visual material, and of course, buy
our US100 Citizenship DVD, CD and Workbook.
How
can I get the US100 DVD and/or CD to study for the test?
You
can go to http://www.languageandcitizenship.org and look for the DVD page and pay through Google Checkout. That way you will be using your credit
or debit. You can also go to Amazon.com and get our DVD there, make sure to click on us, since other people sometimes
sell used products and they don't have the rights to resell. If you want to buy it immediately call us (775) 622-8267
and we will take your information and you can send us a check or money order to 'Language and Citizenship Services' to 63
Keystone Ave. Suite 205, Reno NV 89503. We will send you the DVD as soon as we receive your payment, that takes about
three to five days, depending on your state. Remember we are located at Reno, Nevada, on the West part of the country.
Why people talk about the 'New' exam?
The Citizenship Test changed starting in October 2008, new questions were added to make
the redesigned test more complete. That same year we made the US100 DVD and CD with those new questions and answers.
How much English should I know
to pass the interview and exam?
You should be able to understand simple questions and answer correctly. Please do not risk
to go if you don't know any English because you may fail and it is quite expensive to file again.
How many times can I take the test?
You can take the test twice, then for a third time you will be given about a year, but you will have
to pay the fee of $675 again. You may appeal your case, but if it is for the lack of English understanding or writing,
please prepeare before.
Who can
take the exam in their native language?
Only
people who are 50 years old living in the US as a Legal Permanent Resident for at least 20 years, or those who are over 55
years old with 15 years as a LPR, can take the Civics test in the language of your choice (the 100 questions that we have
in the US100 DVD).
Those who are 65 years old and over, and have
lived in the US as LPR for at least 20 years, they will have to take a simplified version of the Civics questions in their
native language unless they speak English. (Language of their choice).
For any other questions, you can also go to http://www.uscis.gov/files/form/n-400instr.pdf where you fill find all the latest information.
